Are your makes pretty on the inside?

I had a fantastic weekend and managed to do a lot of things that make me happy. I even did a spot of sewing. But I was ridden with guilt because as I was working on the third instalment of my Tale of Skirts I realised I was still far from finished and I had an urge to work quicker and faster to be able to finally have a finished project to show to you. I haven't shown anything new in quite some time. But then I thought that it is a silly thing to do, I should work at my own pace. More than that is the fact that when I work quickly and rush things I make a less than perfect job and end up only half pleased with the result. So I finally decided on my Sewing Pledge for 2013 and that is to "Be as pretty inside as on the outside".
I want to do beautiful garments that I will love and wear. I want to make things that will last. I want to take time to make a good job and ensure it all fits fine. If I feel rushed I will compromise on seam finishes, buttonholes, fit and ultimately that's not what I want. By taking this pledge I'm reigning myself in and avoiding botchy jobs just to get something finished to show.
So what will you get from me from this pledge:

  • Detailed photos on the insides of my future makes, even when it's not as pretty as it should but the effort is there.
  • More in progress reports, which I know some of you find boring but they really help me track my own progress.
Now that feels just right!

Do you ever feel rushed to finish a garment so you can show it on the blog? Does it affect how well you sew and finish the garment? Talk to me!

  1. I'm with you. I might join you in this pledge because I am ultimatley not happy if everything is not perfect ;)

  2. You know, this is a really good question. I try hard to make things as lovely on the inside as on the outside, but it doesn't always work out. I think that's the kind of thing that really improves over time, with experience. Excellent idea. I should take on this challenge too - if informally :-)

    1. Yes, it doesn't always turn out to be that way but this way I will do my best and not feel rushed. I think experience is key like you.

  3. I have always tried to finish the insides of garments nicely ... I guess in part it's because I have an irrational fear that whatever I sew will fall to pieces the first time it goes through the washing machine. But I don't mind the extra time -- I sew to sew, I guess, and while the finished object can be gratifying I still enjoy the process more.

    1. That is good. I do enjoy the process but I LOVE the finished result and the pressure to show it off makes me cut corners sometimes.

  4. My makes are sometimes pretty but if I'm in a hurry, forget it!

I just saw you on Sewintist map. I didn't realise you are at MK. To think of all the times I have been (I'm near Aylesbury). I thought you were on the South Coast, for some reason. Maybe we will bump into each other in the city one day!

  5. Well, maybe we need to organise coffee and cake sometime :) Aylesbury is not far at all.

  6. This is a wonderful challenge! I enjoyed when I rescued sometimes I sewed clothes many years ago and return them on the wrong side ... it's so satisfying when the inside is as beautiful as the outside ... looking forward to see your wonderful projects linked with this challenge ...
